Nestlé is committing £28 million to upgrade its Dalston factory in Cumbria, enhancing production of Nescafé Frothy Coffee and modernising site operations. The investment includes a £17.5 million four-storey mixing plant and two packing lines valued at £10.7 million. The upgrades introduce advanced equipment designed to improve efficiency, ensure recipe accuracy, and reduce manual handling by 80% through the use of larger ingredient bags.
The new packing lines will replace older machinery and operate at up to 60,000 sachets per hour. They are compatible with new packaging materials such as Mono PP laminate, allowing fully recyclable sachets and supporting Nestlé’s sustainability objectives. These enhancements will streamline production, reduce waste, and position the factory for future growth.
Richard Watson, CEO of Nestlé UK & Ireland, emphasised that the investment reflects the company’s confidence in British manufacturing and its long-term commitment to the food and drink sector. The Dalston facility demonstrates Nestlé’s focus on modernising operations, supporting local employment, and driving sustainable growth.
Ian Pipes, Dalston factory manager, highlighted that the upgrades will improve product quality and create a more supportive, sustainable environment for staff. The site produces Nescafé Cappuccino, Nescafé Latte, Coffee Mate, and Starbucks-branded latte mixes, sourcing fresh milk from local dairy farms through a longstanding partnership with First Milk.
This investment strengthens Nestlé’s ability to meet rising consumer demand while enhancing operational efficiency, sustainability, and workforce development. By combining modern production technology with environmental and social considerations, Nestlé is positioning Dalston as a hub of innovation in the UK coffee market.
